The Greatest Sign of Allah's Mercy

Sometimes we think guidance is the beginning of the journey.

The day we started praying.

The day we put on the hijab.

The day we learned about Islam.

The day we repented.

But Allah describes guidance differently, He says:

وَالَّذِينَ اهْتَدَوْا زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَآتَاهُمْ تَقْوَاهُمْ

Wa alladhīna ihtadaw zādahum hudan wa ātāhum taqwāhum

"As for those who accept guidance, He increases them in guidance and grants them their taqwā."
(Qur'an 47:17)

Pause and think about that. Allah did not say He guides them once. He says He increases them in guidance.

Every time you open the Qur'an seeking understanding.

Every time you fight your nafs.

Every time you leave a sin for His sake.

Every time you make du'a in the darkness of the night.

You are taking a step toward Allah, and Allah may be giving you another step of guidance in return.

Perhaps that is why the Prophet ﷺ taught us to ask for guidance every single day. Not once in our lifetime. At least seventeen times a day.

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Ihdinaṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm

"Guide us to the Straight Path."   (Qur'an 1:6)

If even the Prophet ﷺ and his companions needed to keep asking for guidance, then guidance must be something greater than simply finding Islam. It remains upon it. Growing within it. Drawing closer to Allah through it.

So if you find yourself wanting to learn more about Allah... Wanting to understand His Book...

Wanting to improve your character... Wanting to leave sins that once felt normal... Do not overlook these feelings.

They may be among the greatest gifts Allah has given you, because many hearts are alive physically but asleep spiritually. And yet Allah allowed your heart to keep searching for Him.

May He continue to increase us in guidance until we meet Him. Āmīn.
